SOUTH AFRICAN LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND: FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

The South African Library for the Blind (SALB), which is the only national library for the blind in South Africa and the African continent, is seeking to establish a forum for like-minded people called “Friends of the Library (FOL)”. Joining this forum implies that one is committing himself/herself to support the Library in various initiatives aimed at improving and extending its services to the blind, visually impaired and print-handicapped people of South Africa. Presently, the Library's head office is in the Eastern Cape Province in a small town called Grahamstown (Makhanda).

Eligibility to be SALB Friends of the Library: The South African Library for the Blind is opening opportunities to like-minded individuals and organisations to join the forum for the SALB Friends of the Library to achieve the following:

• Organisations, NGOs, and community forums, that can join hands in sharing

platforms and databases with South African Library for the Blind and advertise its

services to attract more blind and visually impaired members so that those members

can access information resources and devices to read such information,

• Individual businesses that value the “spirit of Ubuntu” and are willing to donate a

nominal fee on a monthly/quarterly/annual basis to ensure the blind, visually impaired

and print handicapped gain access to information through receiving devices and

resources that can make their contribution to the society easy,

• Companies who are willing to donate to SALB funds that will guide and assist the

Library to expose young and emerging professional blind graduates to internship

programmes that will help them obtain work experience and provide them an

opportunity for employability,

• Individuals/organisations that are willing to assist SALB with the drafting of sound

fundraising proposals to assist the organisation in generating revenue and funds that

will in turn enable the organisation to extend its services to the marginalised blind

community,

• Individuals or groups of people that are willing to volunteer skills and or are

already part of our volunteers willing to braille and/or develop audio transcriptions to

expand the reading materials for blind people.

The library management will be responsible for the registration of the members by opening a call centre and an account that can be used by the forum and organise meetings and events

to launch the forum so that members can be introduced to each other, SALB business operation and management. The SALB management will account to the FOL on the initiatives established within the framework of the Friends of the Library by submitting and presenting reports on FOL’s accomplishments.
