Quality is a personal matter. What is defined or perceived by one person as quality may be a big disappointment to the next person. The strange thing is that, although it may be difficult to define or describe, we all know when we are dealing with quality. Where there are two people – the chances are that one would get two or more opinions on the same matter.

Makwenzeke Volume 2 Issue 1 – 2010

2009 saw the International bicentenary celebration of Louis Braille’s birthday with many initiatives held by organizations around the world. Here at the South African Library for the Blind Saturday, 13 February saw the conclusion and final celebrations of this milestone as well as the National Braille Essay Writing Competition. An initiative held in conjunction with Blind SA and the South African National Council for the Blind.

Makwenzeke Volume 1 Issue 2 – 2009

2009 is a momentous year for the South African Library for the Blind (SALB). Not only are we celebrating the bicentenary of Louis Braille’s birth but the Library is also celebrating its 90th anniversary. Because these two occasions are so significant and historical, it was decided to celebrate them jointly through various planned events during the year.

Helen Keller once said that we the blind are as indebted to Louis Braille as mankind is to Gutenberg. It was Louis Braille’s contribution to literacy, access and intellectual freedom, through the tactile rendition of the printed word that blind braille users, teachers and producers from five continents came to acknowledge as they commemorated the birth of Louis Braille…
